The Codex Alimentarius Commission (codex alimentarius means 'food code' in Latin) was created by the United Nations to protect the health of consumers, ensure fair food trade practices, and promote coordination of all food standards work undertaken by international organisations. Codex has produced many quality standards for ASEAN produce. These can be obtained
from www.codexalimentarius.net

The following standards for fresh produce have been developed under the auspices of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and are referenced here with their permission for the purpose of serving as a help guide for ASEAN producers. Participation in the development of UNECE standards is open to all members of the United Nations and comments from ASEAN countries are invited. The UNECE Standards are widely applied in international trade, for example 36 of the marketing standards mandatory in the European Union have been harmonized with these standards.
