Quality Documents
Introduction
Consumers are becoming increasingly focused on the quality of the produce they purchase. It is important for producers in ASEAN member countries to improve the quality of what they produce especially if they wish to export to other countries. Quality is a science and there is a considerable body of written information available on quality issues.
The following section contains information from organisations on how to produce and maintain quality produce and information about food safety.

The Durian Quality Management Manual has been produced by the Department of Agriculture, Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, Brunei Darussalam and the ASEAN - Australia Economic Cooperation Programme Phase III (AAECP III). This quality manual was developed to provide complete information on all aspects of the growing, harvesting and marketing of durian to assist the expansion of the durian industry. This includes a Quality Assurance (QA) system using improved production and postharvest procedures for the commercial marketing of fresh durian for both the local and export markets. The manual also gives a comprehensive explanation on QA system for minimally processed (MP) durian, which includes food safety assurance.

The following report summarises research into the post harvest treatments on
phytophthora disease.
Some methods of postharvest control of durian fruit rot caused by
Phytophthora
The following is a mid-project summary which includes results about the use of fungicide to control fruit rot.
Management of
phytophthora disease in
durian
The following is a highly illustrated document that gives advice on the refrigerator storage time for many ASEAN fruits.
Fruits in
Vietnam
This following document summarises some of the SOFRI research including the effect of fertilisers on the quality of longan and dragon fruit. Note clorua kali is potassium chloride and nitrate kali is nitrate chloride.

Postharvest Quality
The following publication addresses important aspects of organic production practices which are also applicable to conventional crops.
Postharvest handling for organic crops
The following study describes how important quality characteristics of cantaloupes, honeydew and watermelons can be
achieved
Case study: quality assurance for melons
The following reports on the effects of high temperature, carbon dioxide and ethylene on the quality of harvested Hass
avocados
Avocado postharvest quality
Recommendations for Maintaining Postharvest Quality
The following links include information about maturity and quality indices, optimum temperature and relative humidity, rates of respiration and ethylene production rates, responses to ethylene and controlled atmospheres, physiological and pathological disorders and other important information.

Storage of Produce
The following links are to documents that provide information about the recommended conditions for storage produce. They include a document listing compatible fruits and vegetables with respect to temperature and humidity and other documents giving Controlled Atmospheres (CA) and Modified Atmospheres (MA) recommendations. Compared to the ambient atmosphere, controlled and modified atmospheres have increased carbon dioxide and reduced oxygen levels which can extend the storage time of some produce.
Properties and recommended conditions for long-term storage of fresh fruits and vegetables, listed by common name
Properties and recommended conditions for long-term storage of fresh fruits and vegetables, listed by scientific name
Compatible fresh fruits and vegetables during 7 day storage
A summary of controlled and modified atmosphere recommendations for selected fresh-cut fruits and vegetables
A summary of controlled atmosphere requirements and recommendations for fruits other than apples and pears
A summary of controlled atmosphere requirements and recommendations for 34 harvested vegetables
Postharvest Problems
The following documents present problems experienced by growers and answers provided by expert staff of the University of California, Davis.
Humidity in distribution centre
Banana ripening rooms pressure recommendations
Problem solver: bell peppers hit with late season losses and decay
Skin discolouration in guava during transportation
Reducing juice leakage in fresh-cut fruit
Damage from heat treatment in mango
Harvesting mangoes before the fully mature-green stage, then ripening will result in inferior flavour quality
